Novaled licenses its technology for solar cells

12/07/2006

Dresden, 7th December 2006. Novaled AG, a company dedicated to organic light emitting devices (OLEDs) and Heliatek GmbH, a company dedicated to organic based photovoltaic, have entered into a licensing agreement concerning the use of Novaled PIN OLED™ technology for solar cell application.

With this agreement, Heliatek will develop high performing organic solar cells using the power efficiency given by the Novaled PIN OLED™ technologies and Novaled unique molecular dopants. Both Companies in addition will cooperate on further developing the organic based photovoltaic technologies.

Gildas Sorin, Novaled CEO:” with this agreement Novaled clearly shows the advantage of its technology in any field where energy saving is requested. Beside display and lighting, Novaled will strongly contribute the very promising organic solar cell domain. The cooperation with Heliatek will sustain our development in this domain”.

“Organic solar cells will become the new generation of solar cells”, Harald Eggers, Heliatek CEO, says. “The Novaled technology and the cooperation with Novaled will give us a strong competitive advantage for our products”.

About OSCs
OSCs, organic solar cells, incorporate organic semiconducting materials in thin layers generating current when light is shined onto them. This can be considered as an invers process to OLEDs. In contrast to inorganic solar cells, which today are mainly based on silicon technology, they make use of relatively cheap materials and low cost, low temperature manufacturing methods on potentially flexible substrates. This will allow a better cost to generated electrical power ratio. They will enter a multitude of applications for solar cells, from small area flexible mobile device power units to large area solar power plants.

About OLEDs
OLEDs, unlike normal (inorganic) LEDs, incorporate organic materials in thin layers generating light emission when electrical power is applied. In contrast to LEDs, they are rather large-area sources with low brightness that emit diffuse light in any colour. They can be easily structured to show patterns of colour or homogeneous white light. Currently OLEDs are mainly applied in small display applications, e.g. mobile telephones, MP3 players or personal digital assistants (PDAs). In the future, thanks to OLEDs’ diffuse emission character and slim/lightweight form, it will be easier for people to create an adaptable lighting environment and to feel comfortable in any mood. By combining colour with shape, organic LEDs will also create a new way of decorating and personalizing people’s surroundings with light. OLEDs offer the potential to become even more efficient as energy-saving bulbs. Once efficient OLEDs are available at mass production costs, they can be used for a multitude of applications in lighting.

About Novaled:
